Our Mission and History

Our Mission

Life Resources is dedicated to transforming troubled youth who are in despair and have thus lost their way to those filled with hope that will serve themselves and society by giving them the opportunity to develop the intellectual, emotional and behavioral skills necessary to become positive, caring and constructive members of the community.

Our History

From its beginnings in 1971 as an ecumenical effort to assist adolescent drug users in the general Boston area, Life Resources has evolved into an agency providing community outreach and residential treatment to hundreds of youth annually. Life Resources is known for its expertise and success in providing opportunities to the hardest to reach adolescents and helping them to develop the intellectual, emotional and behavioral skills necessary to be positive, caring and constructive members of the community. In addition to its residential treatment programs, Life Resources also offers a Therapeutic Adventure Program that is available as a stand alone program to other social service organizations, private companies and after school programs to support their goals of stimulating change, developing teamwork, facilitating communication and resolving conflict.

We are about helping adolescents who struggle with family issues, problems in the community, and difficulties at school.

We take the neglected and forgotten off the streets and provide them with a positive reason to get out of bed in the morning. We take children who need our assistance and provide them the skills they need to survive in life.

We help them to explore their issues, change their behavior, and reach their full potential.

We are about guidance, motivation, empowerment, and security. But most of all, we are about providing a second chance . . .

. . . because no child should be without hope.”

"I can't remember a time in our lives that I felt anyone loved us. My brother was the only person in my life who cared about me. All we had was each other, and they killed him."… Bobby.

These are the words of despair of one of the many children we serve at Life Resources.

The story of Life Resources is not the story of our dedicated staff or the quality of our programs, the story of Life Resources is the story of our kids. Adolescents and their families struggling to turn their lives around. Adolescents who have all but lost hope, and families who have nowhere else to turn. Our kids have faced more adversity in their short childhoods than most of us experience in a life time. They come from famlies where alcoholism and substance abuse are an every day occurrence. They face domestic violence, child abuse and neglect. Many have been sexually exploited. They went to school, but no one ever realized that they had a learning disability. They go to high school, but they never learned to read. Many of them were separated from their families at an early age. They have been through the foster care system, and lived in group home. They have been arrested and locked up in detention centers. But somehow our kids are different. Although they have struggled against overwhelming odds, they have not lost hope. Our kids somehow find the ability to be resilient. They are the kids who have enough courage and perseverance to turn their lives around.

Our Philosophy

The philosophy of Life Resources is to reach the good in every child. We believe that every individual must be treated with respect and dignity if they are to accept themselves as valued members of society. Each and every client must be accepted for who they are regardless of the problems and experiences they bring with them. Through the creation of a warm, nurturing environment, Life Resources provides an atmosphere where each youth feels safe and supported. Feeling safe and comfortable allows clients to examine their issues, become more self-aware, and build self-confidence.

We encourage our clients to tap into their inner resources and develop their individual skills and talents. We support them as they get in touch with their feelings, learn new skills, and develop new behaviors. We motivate them to function more successfully within the family structure and to be more successful members of their communities by realizing their full potential.
